As soon as both couples had left the house, Colleen decided keeping the boys occupied would probably be the best thing she could do. “Jedidiah, Jeremiah, stay right here while I go get us some things to play with. I’ll be right back.”

Choosing tin bowls and wooden spoons in the kitchen, she carried them with her back to the big room. Most folks called it a parlor, but to the Williamsons, it was an all-purpose room for entertaining. Jeremiah was standing on a small table, pulling off his shirt when she walked in. “Jeremiah! What are you doing? Come down off of there right now! Here’s some toys, let’s make some music. Come on over here.”

“I Je‘diah and I a birdie!” The boy shouted as he flapped his wings and jumped off the table. Landing solidly on both feet he then ran across the room and pulled the largest bowl from her hand, causing everything to crash to the floor.

“Good gracious, Jedidiah, I thought you were Jeremiah. I’m sorry about that.” She lifted the boy slightly, scooped his feet out from under him and gently set him on his bottom right in the middle of the bowls and utensils she’d brought in as toys. She sat down on the floor with him.

Jeremiah?” Searching behind chairs and the divan and not locating him, she scurried out of the room, worrying and wondering how he’d gotten away so quickly. Hearing him squeal, she rushed toward the sound. Dashing down the hall, and stepping into her own bedroom, she saw Jeremiah was jumping up and down on the bed. “Come on, Jeremiah. You’ve got to keep in the other room with us.” She picked him up and carried him back to the big room, explaining along the way that it was important for him to stay with her and his brother. “Let’s go play with Jedidiah, shall we?”

Much to her dismay, Jedidiah had now disappeared. This is crazy! How do they do this? Colleen was learning quickly. This time she took Jeremiah with her and started calling out the missing child’s name. “Jedidah?”

“’J’diah!” the twin repeated everything Colleen said. He became her echo.

Jedidiah had found the kitchen. He’d also found a bag of flour and was scooping it onto the table with both hands while standing on a chair.

“No! Oh no! Boys! Is there something wrong with the two of you?” Colleen’s voice was louder and harsher than she’d meant for it to be.

Jeremiah startled and knocked the bag onto the floor. It fell with a dull thud and a large white cloud floated into the air as half of the bag’s contents shot across the room. When he saw what had happened, the little
